Although scientists have found some evidence of flowing liquid water during the summer months on Mars, and a layers of ice just under the red soil.  Mars is a sterile world where the atmosphere is only 1% the density of Earth‘s, Mars has only half Earth’s diameter, 11% its mass and 38% its gravity, making it easy for upper layers of the original atmosphere to have boiled away into the vacuum of space and been blasted out by meteor strikes. However Mars was not always like this 
Massive ancient ocean’s once covered nearly half of the northern hemisphere.
